On February 13, 2026, Groundstar Vineyard & Estate officially closed on the acquisition of the historic Williams Ranch, a 247.02-acre property located along Highway 246 in one of Santa Barbara County’s most iconic agricultural corridors.

For us, this is far more than a land acquisition. It represents a meaningful expansion of Groundstar’s long-term commitment to regenerative agriculture, ecological stewardship, and the preservation of ranching tradition.

With the addition of Williams Ranch, Groundstar now stewards over 320 acres across the Sta. Rita Hills corridor—expanding our ability to implement regenerative practices at scale, from vineyard blocks to open rangeland.

Expanding a Regenerative Framework

Groundstar’s approach is rooted in its regenerative organic farming principles, and is pursuing its Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC) status. The Williams Ranch acquisition extends that commitment beyond the vineyard. Our long-term goals for the Williams Ranch include:

  • Regenerative grazing to improve soil health, carbon sequestration, and ecosystem balance

  • Water management strategies to enhance water retention, biodiversity, and drought resilience

  • Wildlife conservation and habitat restoration, including native plant and ecological corridor renewal

  • Integrated agricultural systems aligning livestock, land, and long-term stewardship

This expansion reflects a holistic view of agriculture—one that sees vineyards not in isolation, but as part of a larger, living system that includes working lands, wildlife, and the communities and ranching traditions that sustain them.

Honoring Family Heritage, Ranching Tradition, and Santa Barbara County Legacy

The Williams Ranch property carries a deep-rooted local history. Long stewarded by the Williams family, whose multi-generational presence has been woven into the fabric of ranching in Santa Barbara County, this land reflects decades of agricultural care and regional heritage. Rodney Williams, from whom the parcel was acquired, is a well-known local rancher in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Chiara's father, Mike Shannon—a Los Angeles native who helped lead the Shannon family’s former Texas cattle ranching operation and was pivotal in the transaction—is a member of the historic Rancheros, an enduring group that represents the legacy of Santa Ynez Valley ranching. His involvement reflects a multi-generational ranching tradition that connects family history, regional relationships, and a shared commitment to responsible land stewardship.

Together, these intersecting histories make this expansion especially meaningful: an opportunity not only to steward tomorrow, but to do so by honoring the land, legacy, and those who have shaped it before us.

Looking Ahead: Groundstar, Williams Ranch, and the Future of Regenerative Stewardship

Williams Ranch will be thoughtfully integrated into Groundstar Vineyard & Estate’s broader mission: to steward land with intention, cultivate meaningful agricultural systems, and create spaces that connect people more deeply to place.

As Groundstar continues to evolve, we remain committed not only to producing exceptional vineyard sites, but to contributing to a more sustainable and enduring model for land use in the Sta. Rita Hills and beyond.

This commitment also extends beyond the property itself, including our support of initiatives such as the MINDSET: Regeneration and Resilience Symposium, which brings together leaders across agriculture, science, and wine to advance the future of regenerative practice. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to steward this land and excited for what lies ahead.
